As a PhD chemical engineer, and lifelong surfer, Guerry Grune knows firsthand what's at stake in the sun. After watching a close friend receive a melanoma diagnosis, he set out to engineer a sunscreen he could trust ā one made entirely from food-grade ingredients, free from synthetic chemicals, and safe for the reefs he surfs. That mission became 3rd Rock Essentials.

3rd Rock SunblockĀ® Sunscreen Lotion SPF 35 is a zinc oxide-based aromatherapeutic sunscreen designed to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Manufactured by 3rd Rock Essentials, this product emphasizes a non-toxic, chemical-free composition suitable for all skin types, including infants. The patented zinc oxide formula has been independently tested and demonstrates the most robust UVA and UVB protection among all sunscreen brands, with US patent numbers USP 9782610B2 and USP 6866841.
This natural sunscreen is made exclusively from food-grade ingredients, ensuring safety and skin health. It incorporates aromatherapeutic essential oils of rosemary and frankincense (Boswellia sacra), which have tested positive for immune support and skin benefits, without compromising immune function in the presence of sun exposure. The formula is pH balanced to be alkaline, promoting long-term stability and skin health.
The ingredients include zinc oxide at 23.5%, jojoba oil, olive fruit oil, aloe vera leaf gel, beeswax, orange peel wax, refined coconut oil extract, gamma oryzanol, and antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Additional components include arrowroot extract, xantham gum, and essential oils of frankincense and rosemary, enhancing the aromatherapeutic properties. It also features skin-conditioning agents like refined coconut oil extract and phosphatidyl choline.
This zinc oxide aromatherapeutic sunscreen offers maximum sweat and water resistance, making it suitable for outdoor activities including beach trips and outdoor sports. It is hypoallergenic, free from endocrine disruptors, parabens, and toxins, suitable for sensitive skin, with no burn or sting reported. The product is cruelty-free, PETA approved, and Leaping Bunny certified, with all ingredients tested on animals being absent.
3rd Rock SunblockĀ® Sunscreen Lotion is available in three variants: Aromatherapeutic sunscreen with rosemary and frankincense, Unscented sunscreen, and Infant-safe formulations. It provides pro-active skin benefits superior to many synthetic sunscreens by preventing DNA damage, mutation, and long-term skin deterioration. The formula's stability over three or more years and its alkaline pH support sustained sun protection and skin health.
Apply 3rd Rock SunblockĀ® Aromatherapeutic Sunscreen Lotion liberally to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating heavily. The aromatherapeutic sunscreen can be cleaned off with warm water and gentle soap. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The product does not contain synthetic preservatives or fragrances, and a natural separation may occurāstir gently before use. No specific warranty is provided, but the product's natural ingredients are designed for long-term efficacy if stored properly.
